(7.6s) A standard spherical lens surface has a fixed radius of curvature, a spherical shape. Aspheric by definition means not spherical. An aspheric lens features a surface whose radius changes with distance from the optical axis. This unique feature allows aspheric lenses to eliminate spherical aberration and greatly reduce other aberrations, delivering improved optical performance. (1.1s) Aspheres are ideal for laser focusing applications as they are optimized for small spot size. In addition, a single aspheric lens can often replace multiple spherical elements in an imaging system. (5.5s)
