Customized Optical Filter Glass

1.) Select the desired spectral characteristics for your filter. Edmund Optics offers SCHOTT longpass, shortpass (heat absorbing), bandpass, and neutral density filters.

2.) Define the required wavelengths for the application. Specifically, determine which wavelengths should be blocked (absorbed) and which wavelengths should be transmitted through the filter.

3.) Choose the required dimensions (including thickness and tolerances) and the mechanical specifications (unpolished, polished, or hardened).

4.) Edmund Optics offers a wide variety of standard SCHOTT colored glass filters, in stock and available for immediate delivery. Edmund Optics offers SCHOTT NG Filter glass types in two distinct families. The SCHOTT NG Gray Glass Neutral Density Filters are designed for applications where the thickness of the filter is critical. While these filters will provide consistent transmission values from 400 - 700nm, variations in filter lot manufacturing may lead to variations in transmission from filter to filter.

If your application requires a specific transmission (optical density), Edmund Optics also offers SCHOTT NG Absorptive Neutral Density Filters. Each lot of these filters is measured and the thickness is adjusted to meet the specified transmission value at 546nm. Each filter is then polished to a ±0.05mm thickness tolerance to guarantee consistent performance. Variations in filter lot performance can result in variations in nominal thickness; however, the transmission variations between lots will be minimal. All SCHOTT NG filter types can be customized for your specific requirements.

Dimensions >50mm are delivered with a protective chamfer. Dimensions ≤50mm (round or square) are supplied without a chamfer but a chamfer can be applied upon request.

Edmund Optics works with a variety of glass manufacturers worldwide and is able to support a wide range of colored glass materials. What’s more, our ITOS Manufacturing facility in Mainz, Germany has an extensive selection of SCHOTT material in stock and available for rapid customization and delivery. There may be substantial lead times for any colored glass materials from manufacturers other than SCHOTT.

Edmund Optics does not recommend that anyone build their own laser safety eyewear from the filters we offer. There are a number of global standards, including ANSI Z136, and EN 207/EN 208/60825 that should be strictly adhered to when manufacturing laser safety equipment. However, Edmund Optics does offer a wide range of Laser Safety Eyewear available for purchase. Always work with your organization’s laser safety officer to determine the required level of eye protection.
